Four Reasons to Invest In Luxury Home Furniture ~ Fresh Design Blog

Kelsey W. Popham

A home is always more than the sum of its parts. It’s not just about the building, the dimensions and shapes of the rooms, the fixtures and fittings, the decor. A home is also about the people who live there, about how their personalities interact with and influence the physical spaces as well as each other.

A home is the stage on which we play out all the dramas of domestic life, both profound and inconsequential, comic and tragic. No, our homes and the lives we live in them cannot be reduced to their individual parts. But at the same time, the parts do matter. After all, you cannot have a performance without a stage and a setting.

That’s why we put so much time and effort (and money) into the furniture we choose for our homes. Furniture plays multiple roles in our lives. We want it to be practical and functional, which for things like chairs and sofas and beds also means comfortable. We want it to look good, as we naturally feel happier and more comfortable in environments that please us aesthetically.

We also use furniture as a way to turn a plain, empty space into somewhere livable – not just in a practical sense, but psychologically, too. Spaces we can define as ours, that we feel safe and ‘at home’ in.

A lot to ask from tables, chairs, beds and cupboards? Maybe. But we’re demanding creatures. We want the best for ourselves, and that means surrounding ourselves with the best.

That’s a big reason why people are drawn to luxury home furniture. It’s not just about show and keeping up with the Joneses. Simple economics tells you that the more you spend on furniture, the more likely you are to tick off all those things you want to get from it. Investing in luxury home furniture is an investment in your home and your quality of life.

Here’s why.

Luxury furniture is built to the highest quality standards

Let’s start with a practical benefit first. One of the things you want from any furniture you buy for your home is for it to last. After all, sofas are for sitting on, beds are for sleeping in, cupboards and drawers are for opening and closing to store things away. Chairs that crack or doors that come off their hinges after a few short years are inconvenient and costly.

You are better off spending more on a premium quality item that will last you for years than having to keep replacing cheap furniture. It will cost less in the long run. An investment in luxury furniture is an investment in build quality and longevity.

It also makes use of the finest materials

Part of what makes top quality luxury furniture stand out is the choice of premium materials. The best materials are those that both last the longest and look the best – a marriage of form and function.

Take different types of timber used in furniture production, for example. At the budget end of the scale you have MDF – composite fibreboard made from woodchip that is squeezed together. It’s cheap and flexible, but usually needs a plastic veneer and is prone to chipping over time.

A step above you have softwood timbers like pine. Pine is strong, durable and readily available. But it won’t last as long as hardwoods like oak and teak, and also requires more maintenance to keep it in good condition. Teak, for example, is naturally incredibly dense and strong, but also highly water resistant. That means it won’t be susceptible to rot even in damp conditions, which is great if you want furniture you can use indoors and out.

Add to your home with the finest craftsmanship

There’s a reason why people like to decorate their homes with pieces of artwork, antiques, fine china, unusual curios etc. As we said above, we are aesthetically minded creatures. We enjoy things that are pleasing to the eye. But we also like to express our own personalities and identities visually, through what we wear, how we have our hair cut, the car we drive etc. Home decor is just another part of that.

Most luxury furniture is hand crafted rather than being mass produced in a factory. That means when you buy a piece of luxury furniture, you are getting something more akin to a piece of artwork than something purely functional. Artisanal furniture is made to look beautiful as well as offer exceptional build quality and performance. You’ll find an attention to detail, little flourishes that lift a piece above the ordinary, that you just won’t get with factory produced furniture.

Express yourself with something unique

Following on from the above, the fact that luxury furniture is often hand crafted by gifted designers and furniture makers also means pieces are often unique, perhaps even a little unusual. If you really want to express your sense of style in your home decor, you probably don’t want mass-produced furniture that you know will be in thousands of other homes. If you want unique, you should automatically be looking at the luxury end of the market.
